Is this the most offensive birthday card ever?

The other day, Web Watch was browsing through various birthday cards at the local Target, trying to find The Perfect Card for a friend.

When picking out a birthday card, one always has to take into consideration whether the recipient shares the same sense of humor (if you go for a funny card), can appreciate a joke at their aging expense, or if you need to go the safe route and go with a sappy poem or note that more honestly conveys how you really feel about your relationship with that friend.

Friends seldom offer cards to each other – it’s more of a family thing, we believe. With friends, it’s easier to just go out for a drink and celebrate the birthday event with them.

But when your friends live across the country, then sending a card is almost the same thing as being there – especially if you get the sentiment just right.

Are your kids fat?

If you’re a normal, reasonable parent – chances are that you’re going to say, “no – my kids are not fat”. Perhaps they’re merely big-boned, or still are working off their baby fat.

Think we’re crazy for even asking? We don’t think so — One study published in the New York Times says that 10% of all children under 2 years old are overweight. That 12.4% of children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old are obese.

If your child is obese at the age of 5 years old — and if obesity doesn’t run in your family genetically at that age — then maybe, just maybe, there’s something in the manner you’re raising your child that is contributing to their lardness.

That’s right – we know that while the vast majority of you did raise your hand proudly waving your mini-computer around, there are still a fairly substanial number of you who still proudly sport a flip phone or other non-smartphone around in your pocket.

And that’s okay. For you, you can skip over this post knowing that you’ve made the right decision.

How’s that?

When was the last time you went through the bins in your storage closet?

Web Watch is betting that you’ve probably squirreled away some things that you thought you’d keep for future kids or grandkids, or maybe you thought that “this may be worth something some day”.

Or maybe you just wanted to have more stuff. Hey, it happens.

So remember back when Pet Rocks were a thing? They sold like flapjacks, then everyone realized that all they have was a rock in a cardboard box. On the other hand, what originally sold for $3.95 can now be had on eBay for $11-$21 apiece, assuming that you have the original packaging. It’s not a ton of money, but you can’t deny that the price point has certainly increased over the past 30+ years since the Pet Rock was first introduced.

What is the minimum annual budget a family of four should plan?

Planning a future budget is one of the most difficult activities anyone can do.

It’s easy for you to look at a single monthly or weekly paycheck and determine where that money is going to be allocated to. So much for rent or mortgage, this much for a car payment, these utilities and credit card bills need to be paid. Don’t forget groceries, gas, and… oh yeah, the kids need new shoes for school next week.

But looking at the bigger picture, it can be daunting to plan three, six, or even twelve months down the line as you can’t always predict what you’re going to need to pay for beyond those regular set payments such as rent or a car note.

There are lots of economic indicators you can use to determine if the local neighborhood pricing is more or less expensive than someplace down the road.

One common thing to compare is the BIG MAC INDEX, as the McDonald’s Big Mac is a fairly standard product that is sold around the world. A Big Mac in Norway is going to be more expensive than a Big Mac in India. Then again, the Big Mac in India is made from chicken instead of beef.. which may be part of the cost savings there.
