What used to take an average of four years to earn a college degree is now taking some students five, six, or even some on the seven-year plan.

It’s not like today’s college kids are dumber than college kids before, but there is something to be said for staying in school and learning more while you can – especially in today’s job market where there is cutthroat competition for work.

And let’s face it – while Mom and Dad are familiar with practically everything, there’s no way that kids can always rely on their parents to help them with some calculus problem if Mom and Dad haven’t used that skill in say, forever.

Believe it or not, everybody growing up had at least one awkward moment that lives on in ancient photos stored in albums or shoeboxes hidden under a pile of clothes in the back of a closet.

If you think that everyone in school was absolutely perfect at everything – sports, tests, popularity – then your memory of high school is much fuzzier than everyone else’s has been. THE BREAKFAST CLUB did sum it up perfectly in that everyone in school was, at one time or another “a brain, an athlete, a basketcase, a princess”… and maybe a little bit of a criminal.

If you are a frequent traveller, you may find yourself needing to select your hotel based on a myriad of online travel websites (like Travelocity, TripAdvisor, Expedia, AAA, Yelp, or others) that not only offer you the lowest price for booking your hotel stay, but also offer what should be the best crowdsourced advice on whether that specific hotel will meet – or not meet – your needs.

Travelling for business has one set of needs; travelling for pleasure has another. Travelling with kids? You may need to avoid staying at a high-end hotel if only because the kids won’t appreciate it as much as you would. Travelling alone? Maybe quiet, security and safety are your primary concerns.

And as always, accurate reviews of hotel location in relation to local attractions or transportation is always a help.

Is this the most offensive birthday card ever?

The other day, Web Watch was browsing through various birthday cards at the local Target, trying to find The Perfect Card for a friend.

When picking out a birthday card, one always has to take into consideration whether the recipient shares the same sense of humor (if you go for a funny card), can appreciate a joke at their aging expense, or if you need to go the safe route and go with a sappy poem or note that more honestly conveys how you really feel about your relationship with that friend.

Friends seldom offer cards to each other – it’s more of a family thing, we believe. With friends, it’s easier to just go out for a drink and celebrate the birthday event with them.

But when your friends live across the country, then sending a card is almost the same thing as being there – especially if you get the sentiment just right.
