Quick poll: should you go naked when you get a massage?

Quick poll:  should you get naked when you go to your spa for a massage or other treatment?

For those who are not familiar with getting a professional massage, such as at a spa or a resort, one of the most frequently asked questions is whether you should strip down nude or not.

Web Watch will make one part of this easy for you: if you’re getting one of those fancy poolside massages while on a beach vacation, chances are that you’ll want to keep your swimsuit on rather than get naked in front of the everyone enjoying their day in the sun.  You may be in a cabana, but cabanas aren’t always as private as they may seem.

In other words, save the nudity for the treatment room.

How much money does the tooth fairy bring?

Parents: how much money do you leave under your child’s pillow when they lose a tooth?

Web Watch recalls that $0.50 was the norm for every tooth we lost, but we’ve heard more recent reports that the dollar value for a tooth has gone much higher today.

Before we get to the topic on hand, here’s another parent question:  what do you do with all those teeth?  Do you keep them? Toss them away?  Make a creepy “tooth necklace” out of them?  Be sure to tell us your family tooth traditions in the comments below.

10 Toxic products you should avoid

Do you read product labels when you’re making household purchases?  Web Watch does try to avoid buying food that contains high fructose corn syrup or has “sugar” listed on the label — but we’re a creature of habit, and Pop Tarts taste so darn good.

But we don’t really take the time to read all those other funky labels and warnings that seem to be applied to practically everything we get nowadays.  Do we care that something was made in a plant that also processes “soy”, “nuts”, and “dairy products”?  Eh.  Not so much… but we know some folks who do care, so we’re not going to make fun of them for this.

How bad is your office bathroom? So bad that nobody wants to wash their hands there

Web Watch has seen some pretty stinky office bathrooms, both literally and figuratively.

There was one office bathroom where you had to get the key from the receptionist at the front desk, as locking the door was the only way to keep non-employees from using a bathroom that they weren’t supposed to have access to.  We’re sure the receptionist didn’t like knowing each individual’s bathroom habits any more than we liked having to share them with her.

There was the office restroom that didn’t have any stall doors.

The bathroom that perpetually smelled like rotten fish.

And then there was the building that had a serial pooper.  Every two weeks or so, a stranger would wander into the building and spread feces all over the men’s and women’s restrooms.  This went on for about three months, until security was finally able to identify the mentally-challenged person and have them taken to a location that could help them.

So when Web Watch says that we know a bad office bathroom situation when we see – or smell – one, believe it.

Study shows the “5-Second Rule” is healthy for kids

Maybe our parents weren’t that dumb after all.

When Web Watch was younger, we recall that our parents did something a bit unusual with all their friends:  when one of the children got sick, the parents would insist that all the kids would then have to get together and play until all the kids were sick at the same time.

This is, if our memory is correct about the situation, how all of the kids we knew ended up with the chicken pox at the exact same time.

From a parenting viewpoint, it was probably good planning; they got all their own kids through the fun of being all itchy and scratchy at the same time as all of the classmates did.  It must have been like a chicken pox epidemic at that school.

Yes, Web Watch grew up in the age of “chickenpox parties”.  We really don’t hear of those happening today, do we?

Do barbershops and haircut salons sterilize their scissors between customers?

When was the last time you got your hair cut?

So you went to the salon of your choice (or local barbershop, or Hair Cuttery, Great Clips, Supercuts, Fantastic Sam’s, or even the neighbor down the street who happens to have the only working Flowbee in the surrounding 100 miles).  You sit down in the chair and settle in for your haircut.

And no matter what you pay, whether it be free, $9, $14, $45, or $150 — you all experience the same thing as you watch your Hair Professional pick up their trusty pair of scissors off their counter and approach your head with their fingers of steel…

“Did they sterilize those scissors after their last customer?”

Only 15% of Americans avoid food poisoning by doing just one thing

Having food poisoning is not pretty, either for you or those around you.

Web Watch knows – the one time it hit us, we were trying to enjoy a group outing while on a trip away from home.  You’d be surprised how quickly getting that ill, that quickly will identify who your real traveling companions are (hint: that number is close to zero during that time period — when it comes to food poisoning, you’re going to be mainly on your own).

So what can you do to avoid getting food poisoning?

Unfortunately, the majority of food poisoning occurs while you’re away from home, eating at restaurants with poor health scores or who happened to receive tainted food themselves.

In other words, when you’re eating out, there’s not much you can do if someone serves you bad food that really, really disagrees with you.
