Bad Computer Habits can Lead to Problems

Any problem can be screwed up more by computer
Any problem can be screwed up more by computer

A few years ago, one of Web Watch’s computer hard drives crashed.

We’re not just talking about a minor “ooh, we lost a boot sector” thing, where we could boot to a different drive and copy the files off.

No, we’re talking an extreme catastrophic event where we lost the entire drive. It was physically unable to spin up, making data recovery rather impossible on our own.  Luckily, we made a few phone calls and found a data recovery company that was able to rebuild the drive’s data and copy it to a new disc.

It seems to be one of those regular “create a public panic” news event.  “OMG!  Look at how silly people are with their passwords!”

Except this time, the people being silly about their passwords are kids.  And with kids, it really is a good time to teach kids THE IMPORTANCE OF SELECTING A GOOD PASSWORD, because it ends up that kids really don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to protecting their personal online spaces.

The survey found that:

Who wrote the first Chain Letter?

Chain Letter
Chain Letter

One thing the Internet makes obsolete that today’s kids will never have the joy to experience is the CHAIN LETTER.

Getting that letter in the mail from a possible stranger, making 3… or 5… or 10 copies, sending the money to the person at the top of the list (while taking their name off) and adding your name to the bottom of the list before sending it out to all your friends…

Yup – CHAIN LETTERS MAY BE ILLEGAL (or not, depending on what you’re sending along), but the Post Office was making their money on each and every stamped envelope that found its way into the postal system.

Today, everybody forwards junk emails around to their entire address book. Sending chain mail has been relegated to a single click and push – all the fun and mystery has been taken out of them… all experiences that today’s youth will most likely never get to have.

Study: Using Facebook causes school grades to be 20% lower; can also get you fired

Parent's Guide to Facebook
A Parent’s Guide to Facebook

Facebook has become an addiction.

Everywhere you look, people are busy hunched over their phones or laptops, feverishly updating their statuses, posting on friends’ walls, playing Farmville or word games — in essence, doing everything OTHER than what they’re supposed to be doing.

Facebook is having a negative effect on business and the economy — in one study earlier this year, over 6% of all URLs accessed by businesses were being sent to Facebook, and that Facebook accounted for 4.5% of all Internet bandwidth.  Just imagine if all that effort spent on poking and updating had been spent on actual work, we’d all be in a much better economic state-of-mind.

Besides, don’t forget that CHARLIE WAS FIRED FROM HIS JOB FOR USING FACEBOOK. Granted, he was spending up to 4 hours a day on Facebook – so that might have something to do with it – but he certainly hasn’t been the only one that was fired for Facebooking while on company time.
