What’s the most germ-covered surface in your every day life?

Germs are not for Sharing

Howie Mandel may have something with his “fist bump” mentality.  Touching other people can be freaky, especially if you don’t know where they (or their hands) have been.

Web Watch knows quite a few people who still refuse to wash their hands after using the restroom, sad but true.  And we certainly hate being introduced to someone immediately after they obviously return from the restroom, as that initial slightly damp didn’t-quite-finish-drying-my-hands handshake is always a bit icky.  We cringe now even thinking about it. The Effortless Sleep Method:
The Incredible New Cure for Insomnia and Chronic Sleep Problems

Have you been sleeping soundly at night?

Web Watch knows that some people can’t sleep due to work stress, poor health, bad pillow choices, or other reasons that could be reasonably solved through outside means (given enough time, of course – go with the concept here).

However, a study by a sleep specialist at the University of Surrey says that the real problem with people having trouble sleeping is not necessarily any of those outside influences Continue reading WANT BETTER SLEEP? TRY NOT SLEEPING WITH SOMEONE

So the other day, Web Watch was flipping through one of our myriad of magazine subscriptions when one of those annoying response card things fell into our lap.

But before we could toss it away as we do all the others, we noticed there was something different about it.  This one had gift card attached to it.

A $500 gift card.

“Whoa,” we said.  What did we do to deserve this, other than subscribe to a magazine or two? Continue reading THE FREE $500 RED STAR WORLDWEAR GIFT CARD — IS IT WORTH IT?

Choosing a job: don’t pick one that has a bad income to education ratio

Get Paid What You’re Worth: The Expert Negotiators’ Guide to Salary and Compensation

One of Web Watch’s happiest days was the one where we wrote our final student loan payment check and sent it off.

We were finally free!

Today’s college students owe an average of $25,250 in student debt – along with high unemployment for when they do get out of school with their degree.  So it’s imperitive to be thinking ahead in terms of what degree are you trying to earn, and counterbalance that with the real-world scenario of what those jobs will actually pay you once you begin your work life.

Employers are always talking about how today’s coddled college students are coming in for job interviews and asking (demanding, even) salaries in the 50’s, 60’s, and 80’s.  Fresh faces out of school might not be able to make such demands — especially if they haven’t choosen their career path wisely.

Incorrect expectations, it seems. Continue reading CHOOSING A JOB: DON’T PICK ONE THAT HAS A BAD INCOME TO EDUCATION RATIO

It’s not just because there’s a superior sense of fashion going on here, women really do have reason to hate other women — and it really does come down to boobs and cleavage. Continue reading STUDY: WOMEN SUPPRESS THE SEXUALITY OF OTHER WOMEN

We all watch Saturday Night Live faithfully every week because it’s still the best place to find topical comedy and energizing live performances of the latest artist-of-the-week.  (To be honest, TiVo is our friend here, as Sunday morning sprinting is about all SNL usually deserves these days).

And yes, we’re regularly disappointed with the content taken on the whole.  Digital Shorts should be funny week-in, week-out… but they’ve been more hit-or-miss these days. Continue reading THE 25 MOST REPEATED SNL CHARACTERS

The Worst Passwords for 2011

By web gangsta | Published:

Post-it Notes
Post-it Notes

Web Watch was visiting an office a few weeks ago when the people we were visiting were trying to log onto the shared computer in the conference room.

They thought they knew the password, but something wasn’t right.  After about 20 minutes of trying, they called their IT guy for help.  He walked in, went over to the computer, and read the correct password off of a Post-It Note that had been taped to the machine specifically for this purpose.

This was in a high-security building, in a room that only a few people had keys for — and the password was taped to the machine for anyone to use.  It probably wouldn’t be a problem, as many people would need to use that same computer, but we’ve been told for years not to post passwords on Post-It Notes. How to pick a college major: choose wisely if you want to get a job

By web gangsta | Published:

Panicked Student's Guide to Choosing a College Major: How to Confidently Pick Your Ideal PathPanicked Student’s Guide to Choosing a College Major: How to Confidently Pick Your Ideal Path

Web Watch remembers we had difficulty choosing our college major.

We certainly wanted an easy path (hey, who wants to work hard while in college?). But the selections that were offered were not necessarily in any direction that we wanted to take.

So we ended up with a major and two minors, all of which are not at all where we ended up going as a career — so it really didn’t matter what we choose.  And years later, after you’ve established yourself in a successful job, what you did in college really doesn’t have any affect anymore… well, except what you post on Facebook, which will follow you to your grave.

But one thing that college students should look at when choosing a potential major is whether they’ll be able to get a job right out of college with it.  Sadly, not all majors will lead to that initial lucrative paycheck that can help you begin paying back your student loans.

Here’s a list of the 25 college majors that have the highest unemployment rate, courtesy of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.  Here are the top (worst) 15:

  1. Clinical psychology – 19.5%
  2. Miscellaneous fine arts – 16.2%
  3. United States history – 15.1%
  4. Library science – 15.0%

Yeah, take a look at the dropoff in percentages here.  From 15% to just under 11%.  Those top four major choices may be ones you want to avoid unless you already have a hookup.

  5. (tie) Military technologies; educational psychology – 10.9%
  6. Architecture – 10.6%
  7. Industrial & organizational psychology – 10.4%
  8. Miscellaneous psychology – 10.3%
  9. Linguistics & comparative literature – 10.2%
  10. (tie) Visual & performing arts; engineering & industrial management – 9.2%
  11. Engineering & industrial management – 9.2%
  12. Social psychology – 8.8%
  13. International business – 8.5%
  14. Humanities – 8.4%
  15. General social sciences – 8.2%

So what majors SHOULD a college student pick if they want to make some immediate cash?  It might be worth checking out the 25 majors with the lowest unemployment rates.  The top (best) 15 are:

  1. Medical technology technician – 1.4%
  2. Nursing – 2.2%
  3. Treatment therapy professions – 2.6%
  4. Medical assisting services – 2.9%
  5. Agriculture production & management – 3.0%
  6. Industrial production technologies – 3.1%
  7. Pharmacy – 3.2%
  8. Communications & disorders sciences – 3.3%
  9. Elementary education – 3.6%
  10. Special needs education – 3.6%
  11. Miscellaneous education – 3.7%
  12. Mechanical engineering – 3.8%
  13. High school teacher – 3.8%
  14. Theology & religious vocations – 4.1%
  15. Management info systems & statistics – 4.2%

How To Take Better Pictures Like A Pro

Whenever Web Watch goes on a trip – say to Las Vegas, Walt Disney World, San Francisco… wherever – we are completely dumbfounded by all the tourists and families who are trying to get “that perfect shot”.

They group their people together on one side of the walkway, then expect the entire crowd to stay out of the way while you compose the shot.

Have you ever been trying to get from Point A to Point B at any of these touristy spots without having to constantly stop to be courteous to these photo hounds?  We’ve gotten to the point where we say, “Screw it – they’re using a digital camera or their phone, they can take another shot” and we walk right through the photo opp.   We’ve got place to be, folks – so let us move on and get out of your way. The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth:
Popularity, Quirk Theory, and Why Outsiders Thrive After High School

Web Watch knows that we’re a bit of a computer nerd.  Some would say that “geek” would be the more appropriate term.  To paraphrase a recent episode of CSI, a “freak” is someone who is naturally talented in unusual ways; a “geek” is one who learns how to do the same things.

So we’ll go with “geek”, as all computer knowledge is learned – whether it be via formal school education or by tinkering around with gadgets and on the Internet for hours/days/weeks/years on end to see how things works and to make thinks work better.

Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs were nerds, and they’re proud of it.

Which brings us to our initial question: How big of a geek are you? Continue reading HOW BIG OF A NERD ARE YOU? TRY TAKING THE 2011 GEEK TEST
