How to Get Ahead in Advertising. (hint: listen to your audience)

How To Get A Head in Advertising
How To Get Ahead in Advertising

Advertising and comedy often go hand-in-hand.

Remember the film HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISINGIt’s about an advertising exec who ends up with a talking zit on the side of his face.  Yeah, it’s worth watching.

Or the Dudley Moore film CRAZY PEOPLE, where ad execs decide to get their advertisements written by people in the looney bin (“Volvo: It’s safe, but boxy!”).

How many times have you looked at the TV or radio during a commercial break and mutter to yourself, “Really?  Did they REALLY just say that?  Do they think we’re idiots?”  Without even knowing what you heard, Web Watch is fairly certain the answer to that rhetorical question will be “yes”.

The Best 200 Jobs for 2011: from Software Engineer to Roustabout

Elvis Presley - Roustabout
Elvis Presley – Roustabout

CareerCast has published their annual list of the BEST 200 JOBS FOR 2011, based on data from the Labor Department, the US Census, and their own research.

They ranked each job in the following categories of topics: Environment, Income, Outlook, Stress and Physical Demands.  Within each topic category, a number of different items were evaluated on a numeric range, with lower numbers leading to better overall scores.

For example, a work environment would be judged based on the level of toxicity in the air, the physical nature of the job, or how perilous the job site may be for the employee or others they work with.

Once all the numbers for every area was determined, they were added up, and the lowest overall score wins.

Here are the top scoring jobs, qualifying for the title BEST JOBS FOR 2011:

Check this site out to see differences between censored and uncensored version of films

Obscene, Indecent, Immoral and Offensive: 100+ Years of Censored, Banned, and Controversial Films
Obscene, Indecent, Immoral and Offensive: 100+ Years of Censored, Banned, and Controversial Films

Not everyone is a fan of censorship.

But sometimes, movie studios release different versions of films to meet different audience needs.  For example, a version of a film shown on an cross-country airplane flight (“this film has been edited for content”) may be cropped differently or have a different audio track than the same film seen on HBO, on DVD, or when downloaded from Netflix.

Sometimes, the studios even release different versions of the films based on actual ratings received from the MPAA — they may sell an R-rated version at Wal-Mart, but an unrated version via Amazon.  Or a PG-version in the United States, and an NC-17 version in Europe.

So the question that Web Watch readers should be asking is “how do we go about to find out the differences between all these different versions of films, to be sure that the version we’re watching isn’t censored… or if it is censored, what are we missing?”

A website to motivate you through your New Year’s resolutions

The Winners Manual for the Game of Life
The Winners Manual

Sometimes, you need a little motivation.

Something to give you a kick in the butt and tell you that you can do whatever you set your mind out to do.

But not everybody can have their own personal life coach, or a direct phone line to former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson.

So what’s an unmotivated person to do when they’re looking for some inspiration?

We’ve got the ultimate list of tacky Christmas light displays right here

Christmas Light Show Music Programming Master 2.0 Holiday Lighting Control Software
Light Show Master 2.0 Holiday Lighting Control Software –
perfect for creating your own Music-Synchronized Holiday Light Display

About 20 years ago, Web Watch was lucky enough to attend a Toys for Tots benefit event, where each new, unwrapped toy allowed you to hop onto a beaten-up school bus with 40 other people and a keg of beer, and drive all over the countryside looking at the area’s craziest Christmas light displays for an hour.

Along the way, the bus driver got lost in the boonies, and the 60-minute scheduled trip ended up taking three hours (requiring an extra stop at a late-night liquor store for additional road supplies and a much-needed bathroom stop).  Needless to say, we did our own Tacky Light Tour the following year with much better success at getting home on time.

Fast-forward 20 years, and we can see how the Internet has really changed things dramatically when it comes to viewing Christmas light displays.
