A Modest Proposal for Saturday Night Live: You Don’t Suck, You’re Just Airing the Wrong SNL Tape

Mr Bill from Saturday Night LiveWeb Watch has just finished watching this past weekend’s Saturday Night Live episode starring Gerard Butler.  THIS WEEK’S EPISODE CONTINUED TO PROVE THAT THE SHOW CAN BE FUNNY if they have a host that is versatile.

As is often the case, some of the skits were hit-or-miss.  Opening monologue and the Beauty and the Beast sketch were amusing, as is what usually happens when the cast throws some comedic music into the mix.

We enjoyed Weekend Update as always, and Keenan’s “What’s Up With That” bit was worth the effort the cast put into it (we’ll see that one again, we hope).  Butler may not have been the strongest host they’ve had, but he certainly didn’t embarass himself – and he showed that he was willing to do anything for a laugh.  No complaints about him at all.   The lack of Andy Samberg and an SNL Digital Short is a different issue, but we don’t have time to get into that today.

How to Ruin the Surprise Ending to 33 Movies, 100 TV Shows, and more

Happy EndingsWeb Watch is not one to spoil the end of a good movie or TV show.

So we know how important a great twisty/surprise movie ending can and should be.

How To Find Your Favorite NFL Team on TV

Carolina Panthers DVDWhen you are a fan of a particular NFL team and don’t live in that city’s local viewing area, you really only have these choices for being able to watch your favorite team play on TV:

  • Hope that your team is playing in one of the weekly nationally-televised games (Sunday night football, Monday Night Football, one of those Thanksgiving games, or that random Thursday or Saturday night game that gets national coverage)
  • Hope that your local FOX or CBS affiliate is carrying the national 4p game that week in a double-header and that your team is in it
  • Get DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket, so you can pay more money than you should just to watch that one game every week
  • Go to the local smoke-filled sports bar and watch the game on one of the bar’s big screens… and if you’re lucky you’ll get the game audio instead of having to watch it with closed captions
  • Watch the game later on a replay aired on the NFL Network
  • Follow along online via nfl.com’s game stats/scoreboard page

Or you have the most common option: rely on your local CBS or FOX affiliate to decide which games they’re going to air in their markets.  The worst part is that they don’t have to make that decision until late in the week preceding the game date.

March 2009 Was Incredibly Indecent (according to the FCC)

The FCC has released their QUARTERLY REPORT ON INFORMAL CONSUMER INQUIRIES AND
COMPLAINTS
, covering January-March 2009.

It’s the usual government summary paper, filled with lots of mumbo-jumbo, charts, and big words to fill up all 11 pages when probably two or three pages would have done just fine.

But if you take the time to read through all that ick, you’ll see an interesting statistic:  according to the FCC, March 2009 was incredibly indecent for TV viewers and radio listeners.

TiVo Statistics on Commercial Skipping for May 2009

TiVo: those who have never owned one will never understand. Those who have used a generic DVR think they understand, but they really don’t.

One benefit that many TiVo enthusiasts love to speak about is their ability to fast-forward through commercials. This has led to some advertisers trying to make their ads “TiVo-Friendly”, so that the core message of the spot will still be conveyed, even as the rest of the commercial goes by in a blur. As an example, you may have seen some movie ads that have the name of the movie displayed at the top of the screen for the duration of the commercial. TiVo users may not see the commercial content, but they know what the commercial was for.

Heck, even NBC CONDUCTED A STUDY THAT PROVED TIVO and DVR USERS DO PAY ATTENTION TO COMMERCIALS. In part, it’s because users who are fast-forwarding through the commercials end up watching the screen intently focused on when the commercial break stops, and if they happen to see an interesting commercial whiz by, they’ll rewind back to watch it.

Let’s take a look at WHAT TiVo SAYS ARE THE MOST WATCHED PROGRAMS AND COMMERCIALS BY TiVo USERS IN MAY 2009:
