One family’s quest to go one year without Disney

Mousetrapped: a Year and a Bit in Orlando
Mousetrapped: A Year and a Bit in Orlando

Web Watch has to admire people like Lisa Ray.

Lisa has strong convictions and a big stick-to-it attitude that isn’t often seen elsewhere.  She really does mean what she says, and says what she means.  Good for her.

Lisa, the founder of PARENTS FOR ETHICAL MARKETING, was upset at how the Disney corporation handled a refund request for the Baby Einstein line of early-learning DVDs.  Her reaction to those events (already documented elsewhere) led her to comment to her family, “I wish we could boycott Disney. But I don’t think we can. They’re too big.”

This got her 12-year-old daughter thinking, and she suggested that maybe they could go a year without Disney.

Lisa liked this idea so much, she decided that was exactly what she and her family were going to do: go A YEAR WITHOUT DISNEY.

Buying a car off Craigslist? Here are some things to look out for

How to Buy a Car
How to Buy a Car

Buying a used car can be a scary experience, as can selling one.

A few years ago, Web Watch had reason to sell our 14-year-old truck, after 200,000 miles.  The vehicle still ran perfectly fine.  We kept up-to-date with oil changes and other maintenance, but it was starting to get some quirks that were becoming more annoying than not.

The sunroof would leak on occasion.  The radio was flaky.  The dashboard illumination lights were starting to burn out.  And we think – but can’t prove – that there was an oil leak that would have been rather costly to repair.  The rear passenger door wouldn’t close unless you knew how to shut the door the right way.  There were a few other things, but the truck ran great and could get you where you were going.  Still, it was time to ditch the truck for something newer and sportier.

Trending: Granny panties are making a comeback (did they ever really go away?)

Granny Panties
Granny Panties

If you are a fan of 1960’s culture, such as what the TV show Mad Men tries to be, then you should be aware that the dapper 1960’s-era fashion is also making a bit of a comeback — a trend that has been directly attributed to the popularity of the fashion styles shown on that program:

And one item that has been consistently praised across the board is that the Mad Men fashion craze has brought back the Granny Panty

The most popular spice found in homes today? Dry Garlic Powder

Under Cabinet Spice Rack
Under Cabinet Spice Rack

Web Watch knows that making great food requires having great spices.

If you don’t have a PENZEY’S SPICES store near you, then maybe you have some other fresh spice retailer or farmer’s market that you could hit up for some glass jars of spice goodness.

And even if you end up buying your spices at the local supermarket, drug store’s food aisle, or giant-size Super Center Warehouse Emporium, the most important thing you can remember is to rotate your spices on a regular basis.  Dry spices especially will lose their flavors anywhere from 6 months to a year after your purchase.  You wouldn’t serve a beer after it’s “best by” date – you should apply the same philosophy to your spice cabinet and toss out anything that’s more than a year old.

Your taste buds will thank you.

The Top 10 Selling Cuts of Beef does not include the “milk dud”

The New Steak Cookbook
The New Steak: Recipes for a Range of Cuts plus Savory Sides

Web Watch has a friend who claims to be a “new-fangled vegetarian”: they will only eat vegetables after they’ve been processed by a cow.

Yes, nothing beats a good piece of steak that’s been rubbed and marinated just right and cooked on a hot grill on a summer day when there’s cold beer to be had for the grillmaster.

So let’s talk a little bit about the type of meat that you’ll want to serve up next weekend.  First, you need to decide what type of meat you want to put onto the grill.  You can always take a cue from the CATTLEMEN’S BEEF BOARD about what they’re saying are the TOP TEN SELLING CUTS OF BEEF for this grilling season.

  1. Boneless Ribeye
  2. Boneless Top Sirloin
  3. New York Strip
  4. T-Bone
  5. Bone-in Ribeye
  6. Bone-in New York Strip
  7. Bone-in Porterhouse
  8. Filet Mignon
  9. Boneless Tri Tip
  10. Boneless Chuck Eye Steak

Not surprisingly, “underwear” still not on this year’s list of things to buy used

How to Sell Used Books on eBay

It’s been ONE YEAR SINCE WEB WATCH LAST WROTE ABOUT BUYING NEW or USED ITEMS, and it seems that the list of THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY NEW and THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY USED have expanded from a list of 10 items each, to lists containing 20 (technically, 21) items each.

On the bright side, our original post identifying those 10 items on each list still holds true.    And yes, underwear is still on the “don’t buy used” list.

So think of this as an expanded update of THINGS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T BUY NEW and THINGS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T BUY USED.
