Fashion Police Rule #18: Do not wear flip-flops at work (unless you work at the pool)

Flip Flop
The Flip Flop

Every day, you hear them.

Clippity, cloppity.  Flippity, floppity.

The sound of rubber slapping against the heel of one of your co-workers who feel that flip-flops are perfectly acceptable office wear.

“But we work in a casual office,” they exclaim.  “Joe in Accounting wears shorts every Friday,” they plead.

Yes, Joe may wear shorts every Friday, but they’re nice shorts paired with a collared shirt and a pair of casual loafers.  He’s dressed to hang out near the beach…not on it.

Confirmation that TiVo Doesn’t Hurt TV Advertising

TiVo 4.0 Premiere XL DVR
TiVo Premiere XL DVR

Longtime readers should recall when Web Watch shared TiVo Viewing Statistics that listed what types of programs TiVo users were watching when skipping through commercials.  Those metrics indicated which were the most common shows to be watched live (such as American Idol) vs those shows that viewers would store up on their TiVo to watch later (such as Grey’s Anatomy).

There has been a long-standing debate among broadcasters and advertisers as to whether TiVo, DVRs, and the ability to skip commercials hurts advertising.  The belief was that if the viewer didn’t watch the commercial, then why bother to buy the advertising in the first place?

In the past year, we’ve seen more creative advertising pieces be put together, in an attempt to “TiVo-proof” the commercial.  Some movie trailers, for example, display static content in a black bar above the trailer being played — so even if the commercial is being fast-forwarded through, the viewer can still see the name of the film being advertised.

Introducing “The Penazzle” (Vajazzling has officially jumped the shark)

Nads for Men
Nads for Men

Remember a few months ago when WEB WATCH WROTE ABOUT HOW TO VAJAZZLE YOUR VAJAYJAY?

Seems like since we wrote that article and Jennifer Love Hewitt continued to brag about her own vajazzle experience, a lot of women have since taken the step to make themselves prettier down there with a few extra crystals and glue – some have even resorting to using stick-on earrings.

It’s become a business unto itself to the point where an enterprising web developer even came up with their own voting website called RATE MY VAJAZZLE.  Web Watch shouldn’t have to tell you that this site qualifies 100% as NSFW.

And as vajazzling has become more mainstream, comedians have started to joke more often about the vajazzle trend with such bits as THE TOP TEN REASONS TO VAJAZZLE YOUR HOOCHIE, including:

This is news? Couple tries to make love 30 days in a row… and fails

I Love Daily

A couple in England thought that they’d reignite the spark in their 12-year marriage by vowing to each other that they were going to MAKE LOVE EVERY DAY FOR AN ENTIRE MONTH.

The pros of such an arrangement vastly outnumber the cons — it will bring the couple closer together by increasing the number of intimate moments, it reminds the couple of why they decided to get married in the first place (not for the sex, but for the companionship it brings), and a rekindling of the initial passion that the relationship had at its beginning but found waning due to other responsibilities that married life and work bring to the table.

In other words, general growing up.

Today’s Fun Fact: By the time a child finishes elementary school, they will have witnessed over 8,000 murders

Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill
Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill

According to a STUDY ON TELEVISION VIEWING HABITS by A.C. Nielsen, by the time a child fnishes elementary school, they would have watched over 8,000 murders on TV.  By the time they reach 18, that number grows to over 200,000 violent acts.

If it helps, the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV every day.  If that person lives 65 years, they would have spent at least nine years – about 13% of their life – simply watching TV.

Today’s Fun Fact: Why more women than men have herpes

Lipstick Sampler
Lipstick Sampler

After yesterday’s WEB WATCH post about the percentage of herpes infections in the US, we received a few questions about one of the CDC’s survey results that stated that more women than men suffered from herpes.

The question?  “Why?”

While we know some men can be sleeping around with more than one partner, that certainly doesn’t mean that men are the sole means that the herpes virus can get spread around.

Leave it to more scientific studies to help Web Watch out when we need to know more about herpes in just a few days than we ever thought was reasonable.

Want to read the best paragraph ever written for a CNN news story? (Hint: it’s about STDs)

Herpes Stuffed Toy

Web Watch was reading a CNN article the other day that shows how important it is to (a) have a good, gripping  headline to draw a reader into a story; and (b) a phenomenal opening paragraph that lays out exactly what the story is about.

These are two rules that every aspiring news reporter should try to follow with every story that they file.

Case in point, the CNN article in question:  THE DOWNSIDE OF “FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS”.
