Statistics: Deaths on Star Trek (or, why wear a red shirt when other colors will do?)

What’s the toughest job in the universe?

Being a red shirt-wearing character on the classic TV showSTAR TREK.

Countless stories, articles, and jokes have been written about the high mortality rate of those ill-fated crew members who always seem to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time on planetary excursions.

Web Watch would chalk this up to mis-management by the ship’s captain and his commanding officers, but Captain Kirk would never see things that way.  He was on a five-year mission, dammit.

Radio dominates in advertising impact survey

How many people listen to the radio?

If you were to pay attention to technology pundits and the general news media, you would come away with the conclusion of, “well, practically nobody”. According to them, all those people who used to be radio listeners are bypassing that “old” technology for new offerings that the Internet has brought to bear, such as Pandora and Spotify. Cellphone playlists. Satellite radio, even, still makes a claim for being a popular alternative to traditional radio listening.

Which Fictional Character Do You Share Your Birthday With?

Ask pretty much anyone about their birthday, and we can be fairly certain that the person you’re asking will be able to tell you about any number of famous people who share birthdays on the same day.

“Harrison Ford!”

“Abraham Lincoln!”

“King Henry VIII!”

“Miley Cyrus!”

A lot of this will be printed in the paper, and the information doesn’t really change from year to year.  Astrologers really have it easy, don’t they?

The dirtiest item in your hotel room is not the TV remote control

Web Watch has told you about DIRTY HOTEL ROOMS before.

And you all know people who travel with a Ziploc bag in their luggage, specifically to use with the TV remote control, as Web Watch has mentioned that the TV remote in a hotel room is pretty much germ central.

But it ends up that the hotel room TV remote is NOT the dirtiest item in your dirty hotel room.

Things we learned from watching The Twilight Zone

If you’re like Web Watch, then you grew up watching the creepy black-and-white Rod Serling-hosted TV series, THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Maybe you’ve even played the classic 1993 Twilight Zone pinball machine, or rode the TWILIGHT ZONE TOWER OF TERROR at Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park…. and still have absolutely no idea about the impact that the original TV series had on America’s psyche at the time the show was on the air.

If you aren’t already familiar with the TV show, there’s no need to read any further.  But, if you’re a fan… then read on.

25 Ways to Tell that You’re Living in a Bubble

The other day, Web Watch was talking with an Internet-savvy friend of ours about the cool stuff we see online, and they surprised us by not knowing anything about the latest smartphone gaming craze, DRAW SOMETHING.

Seriously?  The game has been out for over 2 months now, been all over the news.  And while we haven’t explicitly mentioned it here, we figured that many of our faithful Web Watch readers had already installed it over their copy of Angry Birds.

What it really showed us was that our friend was living in their own little bubble world that they had created, to isolate themselves from the ‘net fluffernutter so they could concentrate on the really good stuff.

You know, kinda like what we do here every day at Web Watch.
